New Food Section

We've just added a new section on food to The Sage Guide website. It lists grocery stores that offer organic produce and naturally-raised meat; restaurants that accommodate specific preferences; and small local farms, farm stands, and CSAs (see below).

CSAs

You can get local, very fresh, seasonal food by buying shares through a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). When you sign up for shares through a CSA, you pay in advance for a portion of a farm's harvest for the season, which you pick up at a designated location. Shares of summer produce are the most common, but some CSAs offer shares of winter harvests (root vegetables, cabbage, etc.), flowers, and even meat and seafood.

If you're interested in buying into a CSA, it is advised to sign up several months before the summer season starts because they tend to sell out. But, don't despair. A few of our local farms have extended their offerings this year so there are a few CSAs that still have shares available (see sidebar).

Recipe

Almond Milk

Here is the recipe for a dairy milk substitute. It's a whole, raw food that lacks the long list of mysterious ingredients found on commercial almond milk boxes.

Drink straight or use as a base for oatmeal, smoothies, or hot chocolate.

  • 1 cup raw almonds
  • 3 cups water
  • sweetener such as stevia, dates, raw honey (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Cover the almonds in water and soak them over night or for about 6 or 7 hours.

Pour out the soaking water and place the almonds in a blender. Add 3 cups of water (and sweetener and vanilla, if you like) and blend the mixture until smooth.

Strain the almond milk into a bowl by pouring it into a bowl through cheese cloth over a strainer. Then pick up the cheese cloth and squeeze any remaining liquid into the bowl.

Variation

Use other nuts such as macadamia nuts (soak for just 1 hour) or pecans (soak for 2 hours).
