Ashtanga yoga is a physically challenging form of yoga. Pioneered by K. Pattabhi Jois (1915 - 2009), this approach to yoga involves a lot of fast-paced moving from one pose to the next. This flowing from one pose to the other is often referred to as Vinyasa flow. Ashtanga emphasizes moving through the poses in coordination with controlled breathing. Power Yoga is based on ashtanga.
Unlike in most yoga classes, the poses in an ashtanga yoga class are set up in a predictable series of poses. There are three main series of Ashtanga poses: Primary, Intermediate, and Advanced.
