Bikram Yoga

Bikram yoga was created by Indian-born yogi, Bikram Choudhury, who brought this style of yoga to the United States when he moved here in 1973. Bikram yoga classes are typically held for 90 minutes in an intensely heated room (usually between 95°F and 105°F) in which students are led through a precise sequence of 26 pre-determined poses. Choudhury states that he determined that these 26 poses were the most efficient way to work all of the muscles in the body. Working in the heat is meant to increase circulation and flexiblity during practice

A number of yoga styles encourage students to listen to their bodies to prevent injury. Choudhury doesn't agree with this approach. In his book, Bikram Yoga, he makes it clear that he believes in pushing students to help them reach their potential. He even refers to his classroom as the "torture chamber." As a result of Choudhury's "no pain, no gain" approach and the intense heat of Bikram yoga classes, there is some controversy over who should practice Bikram yoga. If you're interested in this style of yoga, it's wise to discuss this issue with your healthcare provider.
