The word hatha comes from the Sanskrit words ha, which means "sun" and tha, which means "moon". Because of this, it is commonly believed that hatha is about unifying polar forces and creating balance.
Technically speaking, hatha is a general term that refers to any of the physical yoga practices we see in the U.S. But the term hatha is often used to described the standard, no frills version that most people associate with yoga. When a class is describe as a "Hatha Yoga" class, you can expect it to include gentle, slow stretching poses and relaxed focused breathing.
Many yoga styles (including Iyengar, Bikram, Anusara-inspired, Ashtanga, and Vinyasa)
practiced today are based on standard hatha practice.
